Wat Bua Roi was built in 1887 by Mr. Chot, Mrs. Khloy, and Chuangchot, who were the builders of the temple. As a mark of respect and honor to them, the temple was named "Wat Chot Bua". However, the name was later distorted from its original form.

This was due to the fact that the temple is located along the Chuat Bua canal, where a lot of Bualuang (lotus) flowers bloom. Thus, it came to be known as "Wat Huat Bua". In 1914, the temple received the "Phraja bestow Wisungkhamsima" royal emblem and change the  name to Wat Bua Roi.
